Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Klout is an invaluable tool for charities and NGOs trying to identify and reach out to the most influential people on Twitter. They have created a set of analytics and measurement tools to monitor social networks like Twitter and determine an “influence score”. Of course, influence is a nuanced unit of measurement, so their algorithms take a lot of things into account. Number of followers you have, how many followers the people who re-tweet you have, frequency of re-tweeting, common keywords, trending keywords, etc. Should your charity want to find the people whose opinions count – or become an influencer on a certain topic, then Klout is an essential tool.

With that in mind, check out the top 5 most influential charities in the cause space, according to Klout data. Follow them, learn from them, and see what things they are doing that could work for your organization.

Every Little Click Helps

Volume used to be the key to getting your message out to the public. If you said your piece loudly and with conviction, people would pay attention. Now that the internet has democratized broadcasting and given everyone a megaphone to shout into and a soapbox to stand upon, success will go to those who know how to nuance this medium and cut through the cacophony. Social Media has emerged as a means of effectively scaling 1:1 interactions with people and empowering your audience to become advocates for your cause.

In marketing terms, the conversion is gold. Not only have you found a means to communicate with an audience (addressable audience), or found a group of them who have actually indicated interest in what you have to say (opt-ins_, but you were able to get those people to do the thing you ultimately want them to do. This could be signing a petition, making a donation, watching a video, subscribing to your newsletter – whatever. The science of conversion optimization is a combination of techniques, tools, strategies and mathematics working together to increase audience engagement.

The article linked here goes into detail on some of those techniques. ShareNow’s mission is to enable and empower NGOs to reach their full potential through best-in-class tools, proven strategies and data-driven metrics to measure success.

Great Examples of Non-Profits Using Social Media

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Mashable recently featured five case studies of Non-Profit Organizations who were effectively using social media tools and sites to stimulate engagement with their causes and campaigns. For an NGO to effectively leverage social media, it really has to think much further than setting up the obligatory Facebook page, or a Twitter account that only re-tweets other sources.

An important thing to remember about social media is that it is not intended for one-way broadcasting. Social media allows conversations to take place on equal footing. You get to know your audience by offering yourself up to be interacted and communicated with. This is a pretty challenging concept to those comfortable with traditional broadcast print and media channels. Imagine how welcome you’d be at a party if you brought a bullhorn and kept blasting out your sales pitch. Far too often, that’s what many inexperienced brands and NGOs do with their social media strategy. Have a look at the techniques these five NGOs are employing with the social media tools at their disposal, and you will see things like interactivity, personality and rewarding participation as common themes. These NGOs are using social media as part of an overall CRM strategy to spread the word about their causes and get people engaged, talking about and participating in their campaigns.
