WFP plans to provide emergency food assistance in Ethiopia to up to 3.5 million people hit by drought following the total failure of the Deyr rains at the end of last year and the poor performance of this year’s Belg rains. The lowland pastoralist regions of southern and southeastern Ethiopia have been worst affected with several areas facing critical shortages of pasture and water for livestock. Rising food prices are another burden to bear. The nutrition status of those in the drought-affected areas is set to continue deteriorating with the peak expected in the next three to four months just before the main harvest in October.
